U.S. to Offer New Immigration Pathways for Central Americans and Colombians

Announced on July 7, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will allow eligible migrants, with U.S. citizen or legal resident relatives who have filed visa petitions on their behalf, to enter the United States for up to three years while waiting for their green cards to be available. They will also be eligible for work permits while residing in the United States. This comes amidst ongoing backlogs and delays in the immigration system. Eligible migrants will need to be from the following countries:

  • Colombia
  • El Salvador
  • Guatemala
  • Honduras

This process aims to discourage illegal border crossings by offering new legal pathways. The process goes into effect on July 10, 2023, with no set expiration date. Individuals who illegally travel to the United States after this time may be disqualified from future participation in the program.

How to Participate in the Program

Individuals should consult an immigration attorney to determine eligibility. Once established, their relative must submit or have already submitted an immigrant visa petition on their behalf. Upon submission of the visa petition, approved individuals will receive an invitation to fly to the United States for a more streamlined process under the humanitarian parole authority.

Once in the U.S., individuals will be allowed to work legally with eventual eligibility for permanent resident or green card status.
