The Biden administration announced a new “Recent Arrivals Docket” to speed up asylum cases for single adult migrants arriving at ports of entry in five major cities: Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, and New York City. The goal is to process these asylum cases within 180 days or 6 months, rather than the current processing time, which takes years.
This new initiative aims to address the backlog of over 3 million pending cases in U.S. immigration courts by prioritizing and fast-tracking recent arrivals. It is part of the administration’s efforts to create a more efficient asylum proceedings process and deter migrants from entering the U.S. illegally with the expectation of living in the country for years while their cases are being processed.
The initiative appointed 10 immigration judges to handle cases under the new docket, but it does not provide additional funding to address the overall backlog.
