On November 19, 2024, the Los Angeles City Council voted to enact a sanctuary city ordinance. Under this ordinance, local resources will be barred from use by federal immigration authorities. This regulation comes on the heels of President-elect Donald Trump’s recent declaration that he will be conducting mass deportations once in office.
Becoming a “sanctuary” city is not a comprehensive legal regulation and varies by city depending on the specific local policies. In 2019, Mayor Karen Bass drafted an executive order to “prevent federal immigration enforcement from being able to access city facilities or to use city resources in the pursuit of immigration enforcement.” The vote was expedited, and upon Tuesday’s vote, will bar Los Angeles cooperation with federal deportation.
The Los Angeles Unified School District is also seeking to declare itself a sanctuary and will be voting on emergency policies aimed at combatting discriminatory sentiment, particularly towards the LGBTQIA+ and immigrant communities. Of those is the proposal of a new high school course educating on current events.
