This is the first of a series of blogs between now and Inauguration Day that will contain actionable items that U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and undocumented immigrants can address to prepare for the administration change and possible new policies and enforcement techniques.
It is likely that you or people you know are afraid of what the future holds regarding immigration policies and laws in the United States. It is important to remember that the new president can only make changes starting on January 20, 2025. We strongly recommend that you use the next month to make a plan and prepare your documents to protect yourself and your loved ones.
To help protect our community members, we urge you to share this information widely and subscribe to our newsletter, where we will share the most up-to-date immigration information.
Planning Ahead
In anticipation of the administration change, it is important to create as many safeguards as possible.
- Renew Green Cards, apply to become a naturalized U.S. citizen, or seek any other affirmative relief for which you might qualify based on family relationships, employment, humanitarian reasons, etc.
- Obtain valid identification
- Make copies of immigration documents
- Make a plan for who will take care of your children or elderly relatives
- Know your rights
- Connect with an immigration lawyer
Prepare a Folder with Important Documents
It is important that you start a folder of documents that prove your presence in the U.S. for more than two years. This can include utility bills with your name on them, school or medical records, or even a letter from your lawyer. It is essential that you keep this folder with you wherever you go.
Keep These Items with You at All Times:
- Identification
- Phone Numbers of trusted family members
- Your attorney’s business card
