Kim Luu-Ng recently spoke to the Los Angeles Times about her legal support of restaurant, cafe, and bar employees who are feeling nervous about immigration raids following President Trump’s hardline immigration policies. Kim noted that “the food service industry has become an easy target for immigration raids because there are so many of them and ICE agents can legally enter public places of business without explicit permission.”
ICE agents, despite being allowed in public facilities, are not allowed to enter private areas of business without permission or warrants, such as backrooms and kitchens. However, even with this, Kim notes that “a lot of times people don’t know their rights, and people just let them in.”
Over the past weeks, Kim has had numerous calls from service industry workers, worried about their status in the US. When fielding immigration calls from service industry workers, Kim often has to give difficult news that although a worker may have a supportive employer who wants to sponsor them, their employer is unable to sponsor them, thus disqualifying them for a path to naturalization.
With the new administration changing immigration policies, Kim acknowledges that, “there’s reason to worry.”
