What is the 287(g) program?
In 1996, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 enacted the 287(g) program to allow the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to collaborate through delegation with state and local law enforcement officers, in an effort to arrest and remove immigrants who are deemed a threat to the safety of the nation.
On January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump issued Executive Order (EO) 14159, Protecting the American People Against Invasion, officially reenacting 287(g).
