United States Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has announced the Trump Administration’s plan to track undocumented migrants through required federal registration under the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Immigrants who fail to abide by the following may face criminal and/or financial penalties:
- Registration and fingerprinting with the federal government
- Notifying the federal government of address changes
- Willingly departing the U.S.
Under The Alien Registration Act, individuals who have entered the country illegally are required to register with the federal government and be fingered within 30 days of entry. The DHS will now be closely monitoring the following of this act and punishing those who do not comply. Those who are compliant will be helped with the relocation process back to their home country, avoiding any charges or fines.
The USCIS is in the process of creating a registration form and advises applicable immigrants to begin by creating a USCIS account in preparation. Once live, immigrants over the age of 14 will be required to enroll, get fingerprinted, and update their address, if they have not been previously registered. They will then be issued evidence of registration, which must be carried at all times.
