The Supreme Court recently issued a ruling effectively allowing the Trump administration to resume carrying out their mass deportation plans by continuing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids taking place in the Los Angeles region.
Why Did This Case Reach the Supreme Court?
The ruling pauses a district court’s temporary order barring federal authorities from stopping individuals based on factors like race or occupation without any reasonable suspicion that they are undocumented immigrants or otherwise unlawfully residing in the United States.
The Supreme Court heard the case due to an emergency relief request from the Department of Justice (DOJ) after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit rejected the administration’s request to freeze the district court’s order.
“That decision is yet another grave misuse of our emergency docket,” Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in the court’s dissent joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson. “We should not have to live in a country where the Government can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low wage job. Rather than stand idly by while our constitutional freedoms are lost, I dissent.”
