The United States is reportedly deporting some migrants who fled war or persecution to Cameroon, even though none of them are from that country and despite court orders protecting some from removal.
According to reporting by The New York Times, the transfers have been carried out quietly. Migrants sent to Cameroon are being held in a state-run facility and told they can leave only if they agree to return to the countries they originally fled.
Despite legal challenges, the administration appears to be expanding the practice. On January 14, at least nine asylum seekers, eight of whom had court orders blocking their removal, were flown in handcuffs from a detention center in Louisiana to Cameroon.
Policy Signals Broader Deportation Strategy
The policy offers insight into the administration’s broader push to speed up deportations and bypass the traditional asylum process. The U.S. government has not publicly announced any agreement with Cameroon to accept third-country deportees, and the State Department declined to comment.
A recent Senate oversight report revealed that the U.S. has paid $32 million to other countries to host deported migrants, an approach rarely used before. The report noted that sending migrants to third countries can serve as a workaround to U.S. legal protections that prohibit returning people to places where they may face persecution or death.
