Migrants at the newly-opened detention facility in the Florida Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz” have reportedly filed a lawsuit to gain access to legal representation, stating that the facility has no procedure in place to contact attorneys and the government has made it “virtually impossible,” violating their constitutional rights.
“No protocols exist at this facility for providing standard means of confidential attorney-client communication, such as in-person attorney visitation and phone or video calls that are available at any other detention facility, jail, or prison,” the complaint reads.
Who is the Lawsuit Directed Against?
The lawsuit lists defendants including US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, stating that the government has violated the detainees’ First and Fifth Amendment rights.
The complaint adds that the detainees “effectively have no way to contest their detention” as attorneys who have attempted to enter the facility have been “greeted at an armed checkpoint near the facility and barred from entry.”
