California Governor Signs Five New Bills Aimed at Protecting Immigrants

On Saturday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed five new bills aimed at protecting the state’s large immigrant population.

The new legislation includes measures such as banning federal agents from wearing face coverings, safeguarding immigrants’ health care information, requiring officers to identify themselves with badges or name tags, and notifying families when federal agents are present at schools.

Several of the bills were introduced in response to immigration enforcement actions that caused concern in Los Angeles this year.

According to CalMatters.org, the bills will have the following effects relevant to immigrants:

  • Assembly Bill 49 prohibits schools from allowing immigration enforcement officers on campus without a warrant.
  • Senate Bill 627 widely prohibits federal and local law enforcement officers from wearing face masks while conducting their duties.
  • Senate Bill 805 requires that law enforcement officers identify themselves while conducting their duties, with some exceptions.
  • Senate Bill 81 prohibits immigration enforcement from entering restricted areas of a health facility without a judicial warrant or court order.
  • Senate Bill 98 requires schools and higher education institutions to send community notifications when immigration enforcement is on campus, and prohibits immigration enforcement from entering certain areas without a judicial warrant or court order.

The ID bill along with the laws related to health care and educational institutions, passed with two-thirds support in both legislative chambers and will take effect immediately.
