Chicago Tightens Migrant Shelter Admission: Restricts Stay to 60 Days

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced on November 15, 2023, that the city’s shelter system is restricting its admissions, allowing migrants to stay no longer than 60 days. As a sanctuary city, the city has received over 20,000 migrants many of whom were bussed from Texas. This large quantity of arrivals has overwhelmed the limited resources available, making it necessary to enact stricter regulations over shelter admissions.

Along with this change, the Governor has announced its allocation of $150 million from its 2024 budget to provide aid to Chicago’s migrant crisis.
