Department of Homeland Security Reportedly Considering New Method for Issuing H-1B Visas

The Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is reportedly considering altering the method for issuing H-1B visas, according to a recent filing to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.

The DHS stated that the administration is investigating a “weighted selection process” for applicants under the capped part of the system. This news follows increased scrutiny over the H-1B from Trump’s supporters in recent months.

What Does This Mean for H-1B Applicants?

The DHS’ filing does not specify what exactly a “weighted selection process” would entail, but it implies that this change would apply to the applicants under the statutory number of visas, capped at 85,000 per year. The filing lists the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) as the responsible entity for deciding visa applications.
