Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently announced his move to end birthright citizenship. Protected under the 14th Amendment, children of undocumented immigrants who are born or naturalized in the United States are currently guaranteed citizenship.
In 2018, President Donald Trump made a similar declaration to end this right but never followed through with an executive order. Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign reaffirms his focus on this initiative.
With this policy, DeSantis also announced additional immigration initiatives including:
- Termination of catch-and-release policy
- Tax repayments from undocumented immigrants
- Construction of a Southern wall
These proposed policies are a part of his official 2024 presidential campaign.
Proactive Measures
While the 2024 election is still a year away, there are some proactive measures individuals can take to protect themselves from potential future policy changes.
Adults who are already lawful permanent residents (green card holders) may seek naturalization to receive the benefits and protections of U.S. citizens. If qualified, an immigration lawyer will work with you to file Form N-400 and complete the rigorous application process.
Consult with an Immigration Attorney
Unfortunately, the immigration process is lengthy, especially with the recent backlogs. With the upcoming election, it is important now more than ever to be proactive in your immigration plan to ensure appropriate statuses can be enacted in time.
