Federal Government to Crack Down on Child Migrant Labor Violations

Summary

The Biden Administration has announced its commitment to cracking down on the exploitation of child migrant workers.

Following the New York Times’ recent investigation, the Biden Administration has announced its commitment to cracking down on the exploitation of child migrant workers. Part of the outlined strategy includes stricter federal investigations into companies that may be using child labor. Other actions include:

  • Mandating follow-ups for any child who reports a safety concern to the Office of Refugee Resettlement National Call Center (ORRNCC)
  • Creating new training for unaccompanied children on child labor laws and their rights
  • Increase the civil monetary penalty to further deter companies from exploiting children

The Department of Homeland Security is currently working with the Justice Department to investigate possible human smuggling schemes that may have contributed to child migrants being brought into major corporations for labor usage.
