As recently reported by The Hill, immigration advocates have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for a policy that requires undocumented immigrants to register with the government.
Under the Immigration and Nationality Act, the Trump administration now requires that anyone who is above the age of 14 and not in the country legally must register with the government and update their information if anything changes.
Immigrant Freedom Jeopardized
Immigration advocates have raised the alarm that the new rule can unfairly target immigrants. Michelle Lapointe, the legal director at the American Immigration Council, noted that “Anyone perceived to be an immigrant would have to carry their immigration documents with them.”
Many view this new rule as the government encouraging “self-deportation,” making migrant advocacy hesitant to encourage at-risk communities to register. Immigration workers worry that this rule can criminalize and trap migrants who are fleeing precarious situations in their home countries.
Reeves Immigration Law Group proudly stands and supports immigrant populations. If you believe that you may be at risk for deportation if you self-register, please contact an experienced immigration attorney today.
