On August 8, 2023, Massachusetts declared a state of emergency due to the overcapacity of migrants and refugees at its shelters. The state reported an estimated 5,600 families and over 20,000 people within its shelter facilities, an increase of nearly 80% from the year prior.
Governor Maura Healey asked the federal government for financial assistance and expedited processing of applications for work authorization. With this assistance, migrants may be able to earn the means to support themselves and move beyond the overcrowded shelters.
Other states have also encountered issues as migrants continue to arrive in large numbers.
