Mexico Denies Implementation of U.S. Migrant Transit Centers

On October 10, 2023, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador rejected the United States’ request to fund migrant transit centers within the country, asking the U.S. to focus its efforts on other countries that are the primary source of migration. Mexico hopes to initiate an agreement with other Latin American leaders on a common plan surrounding these centers.

The purpose of U.S.-funded migrant transit centers is to ideally combat the influx of migrants at the border. A center has already been successfully integrated in Guatemala, where applications for work visas, family reunifications, and refugee status are being processed.
