Ahead of the 2024 elections and proposed policies from both political parties, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has recorded low numbers of encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border.
December 2023 had an alarming 249,741 apprehensions, a record high for a single month. While Q4 of 2024 has just begun, 107,473 were reported in August and 101,790 in September, proving a steady decline.
Apprehensions are referred to when migrants illegally crossing the border are taken into custody where they either are granted asylum or similar legal status, or are deported.
These numbers can be correlated with President Joe Biden’s executive order in June of 2024, which allows for the closure of the border when it becomes overwhelmed. That ruling has faced legal challenges and was recently found to violate U.S. law by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
