The Trump administration announced on Thursday that it would cap the number of refugees allowed into the United States at 7,500 over the next year, with priority given to white South Africans.
The notice represents a sharp reduction from the previous limit of 125,000 set under former President Biden. This refugee cap is a historic low.
While no specific explanation was provided for the reduction, the notice stated that the move was “justified by humanitarian concerns or is otherwise in the national interest.”
Earlier this year, President Trump signed an executive order suspending the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), saying the pause would enable authorities to focus on national security and public safety.
