Governor Newsom recently signed the bill AB 1766, often referred to as California IDs For All, which will allow undocumented immigrants who are non-drivers to receive a California identification card. The ID system would allow individuals to more easily apply for housing, banking, employment, and health services.

California was the first state to grant undocumented individuals a driver’s license by passing AB 60 in 2013. It will now be the first state to provide a standardized identification card for illegal immigrants. If passed, the bill will go into effect in January 2024.

Things That Require an ID To Access

This groundbreaking decision will allow for greater access to resources typically requiring an identification card including but not limited to:

  • Insurance
  • Food stamp applications
  • Banking accounts
  • Unemployment applications
  • Marriage licenses
  • Hotel or other rentals
  • Prescription medications
