Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has made the decision to send law enforcement and $2.5 million dollars in healthcare resources to Springfield, Ohio, a city that has been facing a major surge in Haitian migrants in recent years.
Ohio’s Response to Immigration Surge
During the U.S. presidential debate on September 10, 2024, Springfield’s immigration crisis was put on public display. As a response to the publicity, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has looked into ways Ohio can file a lawsuit against the federal government to prevent an unlimited amount of immigrants from coming into Ohio.
Gov. DeWine plans on sending 2.5 million dollars worth of aid into Springfield, Ohio for the next two years to support the growing Haitian migrant community. To accommodate the recent immigration surge, Ohio has invested resources into the Springfield schools, healthcare services, and translation services.
Haitian Immigrants Under Temporary Protected Status
Since 2020, over 15,000 Haitian immigrants have moved to Springfield, Ohio making up around 25% of the city’s population. The majority of these migrants are under temporary protected status (TPS). This protection grants immigrants who are unable to return home to their country for reasons such as armed conflict, environmental disasters, or other temporary conditions the ability to stay in the United States. Currently, sixteen countries are designated for TPS, including Ukraine, Nepal, and Syria.
The TPS designation can last for up to 18 months, and it is important to connect with a TPS immigration lawyer to plan for the next steps when your TPS is set to expire.
