Trump Administration Calls Off Planned Surge of Federal Agents in San Francisco

Last week, the Trump administration announced a large-scale immigration enforcement effort in the Bay Area, deploying more than 100 federal agents including personnel from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to the U.S. Coast Guard base in the East Bay.

Federal officials insist the operation targets “the worst of the worst,” including violent offenders and gang members. However, immigration advocates note that many of those detained have no criminal records. Since May, at least 80 asylum seekers have been arrested in San Francisco courthouses, according to Milli Atkinson of the city’s Rapid Response Network.

Trump has invoked federal authority to deploy National Guard troops in multiple cities. There are about 300 Guard members that will remain under federal control until 2026.

As of Friday, President Trump called off a planned “surge” of federal immigration agents in San Francisco.

What Does This Mean For Immigrants?

The Trump Administration’s escalating immigrant enforcement actions are a direct challenge to California’s long-standing sanctuary policies and immigrant protections. This intensified pressure highlights the need for immigrants and mixed-status families to understand their rights and seek immediate guidance from immigration attorneys.
