Trump Administration Revises U.S. Citizenship Test

The Trump administration is set to implement changes to the U.S. citizenship test, making it more challenging for applicants. They are reinstating the 2020 Naturalization Civics Test with some modifications. Beginning October 20, 2025, the 2025 Naturalization Civics Test will apply to individuals who file their naturalization applications on or after that date.

The Current Citizenship Test

Under the current system, applicants must correctly answer at least 6 out of 10 questions randomly selected from a pool of 100 civics questions. These questions, which are publicly available online, are chosen by the USCIS officer administering the interview. In addition to the civics portion, applicants must demonstrate basic proficiency in English. The current format was designed with input from education experts to ensure it fairly evaluates whether applicants are prepared to participate fully in civic life, including voting.

2025 Naturalization Civics Test

The updated 2025 naturalization civics test would raise the difficulty level by requiring a higher number of correct answers to pass. A potential essay section is also being considered, in which applicants might be asked to explain what becoming an American means to them.
