Trump’s Threats of Mass Deportations Impacts Central America’s Ability to Care for Vulnerable Migrants

Norma, a 69-year-old Honduran mother who sought asylum in the U.S. after being targeted by violent gangs, is back in Honduras after her request for asylum to the U.S. was rejected. To escape the violence in Honduras, her only hope is to continue to seek asylum.

Migrants from Central America, like Norma, will be deeply affected by Trump’s plans of mass deportation and their own country’s ability to take in the influx of vulnerable migrants.

A New Humanitarian Crisis: Lack of Capacity and Resources

Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador are some of the Central American countries that expect to be greatly impacted by the planned mass deportations. While around half a million deportees have returned to Honduras since 2015, the impending inundation of migrants will create a new humanitarian crisis in these countries.

The Deputy Foreign Minister of Honduras, Antonio García, noted that when people get sent back on deportation flights and return to their country, they are the lowest priority for receiving aid. With little capacity to take care of these populations, authorities abandoning deportees, and aid networks being stretched thin, vulnerable migrants are returning to a bleak future.

While some migrants are grateful to be out of U.S. detention facilities, others are anxious as they return to their home country with debt to pay off and fear of gang violence.

Despite the immigration crackdown, people will continue to migrate to the U.S. in hopes of a better life free from poverty and violence. If you are considering coming to the U.S. or have already arrived, it is important to consult with an immigration attorney as soon as possible.
