The Biden administration has announced that beginning in 2023, the United States will begin immigration visa processing in Cuba at their embassy in Havana. Once in place, the policy will permit Cubans sponsored by relatives in the U.S to interview directly in Havana as opposed to traveling to Guyana, an action that was put in place during the Trump administration. In addition, as part of the Cuban Reunification Parole Program, the embassy will be staffed with additional government personnel to handle the requests.
This action will ideally discourage illegal and unsafe migration as the number of cases has risen in the past year. The United States has committed to annually ensuring the legal migration of 20,000 Cubans, excluding immediate relatives of U.S. citizens.
