USCIS Introduces New Process for ADIT Stamps

The USCIS will be adopting a new procedure to obtain ADIT stamps, announced on March 16, 2023. This update comes from the ongoing delays in processing ADIT stamps, and will ideally streamline the process.

What are ADIT stamps?

ADIT stamps provide temporary proof of lawful permanent resident status and are typically issued during the processing of Form I-90, I-751, or N-400. The document will be valid for up to one year.

Those eligible for the ADIT stamp include:

  • Legal permanent residents (LPR) without a green card. Typically these individuals are already approved for permanent resident status and are simply waiting for the issuance of their green card.
  • Legal permanent residents with a pending Form I-90, I-751, or N-400 whose automatic extension has already expired.

What Was the Previous Process for the Issuing of ADIT Stamps?

The previous procedure for ADIT stamp processing required applicants to:

  • call the USCIS Contact Center
  • request an InfoPass appointment
  • attend the appointment at the local USCIS Field Office once it was assigned

At the USCIS Field Office appointment, the ADIT stamp would be placed in their passport. However, this lengthy process was further drawn out due to delays throughout the process. Individuals found difficulty in getting in contact with the Contact Center in a timely manner and finding an available appointment.

USCIS Updates – New Process for ADIT Stamps

The updated procedure will now require participants to call the Contact Center, at which point they will verify their identity and address with an officer. From there the USCIS officer will either:

  • Provide proof of permanent resident status through the resident’s local USCIS Field Office through a Form I-94 with an ADIT stamp, DHS seal, and printed photo of the resident (to be valid for up to one year)
  • Request the individual to proceed with an in-person InfoPass appointment depending on the urgency, availability of a usable photo, and other similar circumstances
    • Note, an in-person interview may also be required if an individual’s identity and/or address cannot be verified on the call.
