Venezuelan Migrants Granted Work Permits Under Temporary Legal Status

On September 20, 2023, the Biden administration granted temporary legal status to an estimated 400,000 Venezuelans. After reviewing the country’s conditions, the temporary protected status (TPS) has been extended for 18 months and redesignated which will allow new eligible migrants who arrived on or before July 31, 2023, to apply.

Migrants under TPS are permitted to legally work and live in the United States, protecting them from deportation. Venezuelan migrants are now able to get work permits, with the U.S. employing accelerated processing for employment authorization documents for those with the CBP One app.

This decision stems from the recent influx of migrants, leading to overcrowding of shelters. Ideally, those with temporary legal status will have the means to support themselves more efficiently without having to rely on city-provided services. Along with this ruling, Venezuelan migrants may also be eligible for a parole program in place for citizens of this country as well as Haiti, Nicaragua, and Cuba.
