Biden Protects Palestinian Immigrants in the U.S. From Deportation

On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, President Biden issued an executive order to protect Palestinian immigrants from deportation. Since October, there has been a war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Due to the ongoing violence, Biden directed federal immigration officials to temporarily delay the deportation of Palestinian immigrants in the U.S.

What Does the Executive Order Do?

Biden used the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) presidential program to protect a few thousand Palestinians living in the U.S. from being deported into a war zone. This program offers immigrants options for temporary work permits.

The DED program is a way in which presidential administrations can protect immigrant groups from deportation without involving Congress.

As of now, Biden has delayed deportation for Palestinian immigrants to last for 18 months. This program will not apply to Palestinian immigrants outside of the U.S. and those who are convicted of crimes. Palestinian immigrants who return to the West Bank or Gaza, will not be eligible for the program.
