On July 17, 2023, The Southern Poverty Law Center, ACLU of Florida, American Civil Liberties Union, American Immigration Council, and the Americans for Immigrant Justice filed a lawsuit against Governor Ron DeSantis and others for their role in a recently-passed immigration law.
The state’s immigration law was passed in May and largely tightened restrictions on illegal immigration through the enforcement of the E-Verify program, limiting social services benefits to non-permanent residents, and other similar action items.
A major focus of the lawsuit is on DeSantis’ criminalization of transporting individuals into the state. Under the law, individuals can be charged with human trafficking if they aid an undocumented migrant.
Advocates fear it will result in “unlawful arrest, prosecution, and harassment.” They also question whether it is constitutional for the state to obstruct the regulations of federal authorities.
