Costa Rica Receives First U.S. Deported Migrants Under New Agreement

Costa Rica has received its first group of migrants deported from the United States as part of the March agreement between the two countries. The initial arrival included 25 people from countries such as Albania, Cameroon, China, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kenya, and Morocco.

Under the deal, Costa Rica will accept up to 25 migrants per week. Upon arrival, migrants receive initial support from Costa Rica’s migration police, with food and temporary housing provided for up to seven days by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The United States is funding the program.

What Do Critics Think of This Policy?

The policy is part of a broader U.S. effort to deport migrants to third countries when their countries of origin refuse to accept them. Human rights advocates argue that it can leave migrants stranded far from home, often in places where they do not speak the language or have any family ties. In February, Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee released a report finding that these deportation agreements with foreign governments cost American taxpayers millions of dollars, while producing little overall benefit.
