The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ judges have officially granted the Trump administration’s request to end the district court order that previously gave Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for an estimated 60,000 immigrants from Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua in the United States.
This news comes after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced last month that the current TPS for individuals from these countries would lapse as of July 5. However, a 60-day period was required before TPS protections officially terminated.
What Does this Verdict Signify?
Although immigration activists have warned that removing these protections will allow immigrants to be deported to countries that remain unsafe, the court’s ruling signifies that Nicaraguan, Nepali, and Honduran immigrants will no longer have the right to work or travel outside the U.S. and return freely.
“The Trump administration is systematically de-documenting immigrants who have lived lawfully in this country for decades, raising U.S.-citizen children, starting businesses, and contributing to their communities,” National Day Laborer Organization attorney Jessica Bansal stated. “The court’s unexplained decision to let the TPS terminations take effect–despite a district court finding them likely unconstitutional–will cause tremendous, senseless hardship for tens of thousands of families, including over 40,000 U.S.-citizen children of TPS holders.”
