DOJ Targets Naturalized Citizens in Plans to Revoke Status

A recent memo by the Department of Justice highlights new guidelines to revoke citizenship from naturalized individuals who have been convicted of or face pending charges over various crimes, fraudulently gained status by failing to admit to past criminal acts, or pose a threat to national security.

Priorities are outlined as those who:

Have a nexus to terrorism, espionage, or the unlawful export of sensitive goods, technology, or information

Have engaged in human rights violations, including torture and war crimes

Have engaged in furthering gangs, transnational criminal organizations, or drug cartels

Engaged in human trafficking, sex offenses, or violent crimes

Engaged in financial fraud

Engaged in fraud against private individuals or corporations

Have been referred by a United States Attorney’s Office or to the Civil Division of the Division

Though, it is noted in the memo that the DOJ does not intend to place limitations on denaturalization efforts. Advocates fear that this could come at a high risk to many individuals as the Administration continues its crackdown. Due to the civil nature of many immigration cases, many lack legal representation and their fate largely lies in the hands of the government, which determines whether they are of  “good moral character,” which is highly subjective.

Consult a Naturalization Attorney Today

Denaturalization will cause individuals to lose their lawful status, making them vulnerable to deportation. While this can be highly overwhelming, you are not alone. A naturalization attorney can help advise on alternative statuses or actions to take in light of this memo, to minimize the chances of losing lawful status.
