A federal judge in Los Angels is expected to issue a ruling shortly in a lawsuit brought on by immigration activists in Public Counsel and the American Civil Liberties Union, aiming to issue temporary restraining orders restricting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from conducting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in the area.
The judge is seemingly erring on the side of granting access to lawyers for all detainees and barring immigration stops without reasonable suspicion of criminal activity, siding with the wishes of attorneys from Public Counsel and the ACLU who are seeking to end “roving patrols” based on race and ethnicity.
Mayor Speaks Out Against Trump Administration’s Immigration Tactics
In the midst of the ongoing lawsuit, LA Mayor Karen Bass accused ICE agents of inciting “fear and terror” among residents of the city and targeting migrants with temporary legal status.
“The Trump administration does have problems with people here with legal status. Otherwisethey wouldn’t be detaining people when they show up for their annual immigration appointment,” she said. “They are here legally now. They’re talking about canceling temporary status for people who are from countries that are in conflict.”
