On March 8, 2023, a Florida federal judge agreed with the state’s Republican attorney general that Biden’s immigration policy violated U.S. immigration laws. The policy in question, referred to as “catch and release,” permitted the Biden administration to order the release of many migrants who illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexican border, as opposed to detaining them.
In order to combat overcrowded detention facilities, the Department of Homeland Security issued a 2021 memo that authorized alternative methods including the use of ankle bracelets, phone monitoring or check-ins by immigration officers.
The administration will now have seven days to file an appeal before this decision becomes finalized.
