Mass Revocation of Student Visas

Colleges and universities across the United States have reported alarming rates of international student visa revocations under the Trump administration. Among these schools are Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, Ohio State University, and Michigan.

The student visas, primarily F-1 visas, have allegedly been revoked with little prior notice to the visa holders and schools, increasing the possibility of detention or deportation for students unaware of their loss of legal status. Being stripped of an F-1 visa typically only impacts an international student’s ability to leave and return to the U.S.; however, when SEVIS registration has been terminated as well, these individuals are required to leave immediately, or else they may face detention and deportation. As the cause for many of these revoked visas remains unknown, these students are unknowingly being arrested and detained by ICE.

This news comes amid the Trump administration’s crackdown on student protestors; however, some of the reported revocations were unrelated and tied to misdemeanors such as traffic violations.
