The Cost of U.S. Citizenship is About to Rise

On April 1, 2024, the cost of the United States citizenship application is expected to rise as much as 19%. The cost of obtaining a green card will be rising as well.

There are more than 9 million legal permanent residents who qualify to apply for citizenship but have not done so yet. It is recommended to speak to an immigration lawyer about applying for U.S. citizenship to lock in the current price to apply before April 1.

Costs of U.S. Citizenship

Immigration costs in the United States vary. The naturalization application form, N-400 currently costs $640 for a paper application and $725 for the application and fingerprint fee. On April 1, both of these applications will cost $760.

For lower-income individuals, the subsidy rate of naturalization will be increasing from $320 to $380.

Green cards have a much steeper price increase. After April 1, the permanent resident fees will increase from $1760 to $3,005.

Improved Immigration Services

The United States is adjusting fees due to inflation. Increased fees for green cards and naturalization processes will help cover immigration services which are provided at 0 cost to refugees, asylum seekers, and other vulnerable immigrant groups.

The immigration services agency reduced the average wait time for naturalization from 10 ½ months to six months in 2023 and hopes that the increased immigration fees will allow them to expedite the immigration process.

Paying the green card and citizenship fees, however, does not guarantee that one’s application will be approved. It is recommended to speak to an immigration attorney to assist you with your application to ensure that you receive the ideal outcome.
