A few months ago, the Supreme Court ruled for a second time to allow the Trump administration to proceed with their plans to cease the implementation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans.
On Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the administration’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans. The move comes amid concerns that the recent capture of Venezuelan politician Nicolás Maduro could lead to instability and potential chaos in the country.
An estimated 600,000 Venezuelans living legally in the U.S. under TPS could now face deportation to a country whose political future remains uncertain.
Noem was asked on Fox News whether Venezuelans should be allowed to remain in the U.S. given the unrest in their home country, she argued that Venezuela is “more free today than it was yesterday” and said that TPS recipients could instead apply for refugee status.
