The Trump administration has resumed the practice of detaining migrant families with children in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, the latest in a series of moves to carry out his campaign promise of record-high deportations.
According to an internal government report obtained by CBS News, ICE detained the first group of migrant parents and three children in a detention facility in Texas on Thursday. Tricia McLaughlin, the Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman, confirmed that these migrants have deportation orders and that the Trump administration is refitting two ICE detention centers in Texas – used by the Biden administration to hold migrant adults – to detain families with minor children.
The Trump administration’s move to revive this practice reverses a policy implemented by the Obama administration and continued by the Biden administration, which discontinued the long-term detention of migrant families, intending to discourage families from crossing the southern border illegally.
ICE’s Detention Capacity Has Depleted Following Pressure from Trump Administration
Top Trump administration officials are pressuring ICE to ramp up arrests and deportations, despite its exhausted detention capacity. According to internal government statistics, ICE’s detention system was at 120% capacity last week with more than 46,000 migrants, despite only having 38,000 beds.
