U.S. Solidifies Immigration Deal With Canada

The United States and Canada have reached a deal on a decades-old agreement to restrict asylum. In order to combat the surge of migration at the United States’ Northern Canadian border, both countries have agreed to turn away those crossing the border illegally. Additionally, Canada will increase its intake and will be admitting 15,000 migrants on a humanitarian basis in 2024.

Under this immigration deal, the U.S. and Canada will stress the “safe third country” requirement, meaning those applying for asylum must do so in the first safe country they arrive in, as opposed to going directly to these two countries.

While the deal is yet to be fully disclosed, President Joe Biden will meet with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this week to discuss the next steps.
