Trump Administration Wins Court Battles to End TPS for Nepal, Honduras, and Nicaragua Immigrants

A federal appeals court on Monday allowed President Trump to move forward with ending deportation protections for more than 60,000 migrants from Nepal, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, has sought to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for hundreds of thousands of migrants who were granted legal protection due to instability, violence, or war at home.

Those efforts have faced repeated legal challenges, with several district court judges ruling against the administration and concluding that the terminations were predetermined and motivated by an intent to dismantle TPS rather than by country conditions.

Venezuelans Also Face Loss of Protections

This is part of the administration’s broader effort to scale back the TPS program designed to protect migrants fleeing crises in their home countries.

Last year, the Supreme Court ruled for a second time to allow the Trump administration to proceed with their plans to cease the implementation of TPS for Venezuelans.  An estimated 600,000 Venezuelans living legally in the U.S. under TPS now face deportation to a country whose political future remains uncertain.
